USP — United States Pharmacopeia

USP is an independent, scientific nonprofit organization that offers evidence-based outreach, advocacy and collaboration with federal and state policy makers and other stakeholders to ensure consumers and patients receive quality medicines, dietary supplements and foods. The organization provides monographs for drug substances (i.e., standards for identity, strength, purity, etc.); reference samples of drug substances for quality testing comparisons; and procedural and quality guidelines for preparing medications, including several chapters specifically written for compounding practices.

Many U.S. federal and state regulators, as well as global regulators, follow USP guidelines when creating regulations. Examples in U.S. include the CDC/NIOSH, FDA/ FD&C and DSQA.
