Compounding: It’s Personal

Our mantra has always been to be the pharmacy that is able to solve therapeutic problems with a personalized compounded solution. We want to be known for our problem-solving expertise and that’s why we collaborate with prescribers on customized solutions for their patients.

Patient Success Story: Jennifer the Parrot

Jennifer, a parrot, was adopted by her current owner after being neglected by a previous owner. A patient of ours for several years, Jennifer receives an oral enalapril suspension that we dispense in pre-filled oral syringes for easy and accurate dosing; she continues to remain stable on the medication. During the summer, we look forward to seeing Jennifer when her owner, Susan, brings her in for visits. She's developed quite a personality and loves sharing her vocal skills with us at the pharmacy!

Favorite PCCA Base

For topical hormone therapy, our go-to base is VersaBase® Cream and/or VersaBase Gel. And for pain management, Lipoderm® and Lipoderm ActiveMax® give us the confidence to deliver single or multiple active ingredients.

Compounding: It’s Personal

After working at a retail pharmacy for a few years, where the owner wasn’t interested in compounding, my entrepreneurial spirit drove me to open my own compounding pharmacy. I knew I could make a meaningful difference for patients with personalized medicine. That’s when I called PCCA, I knew I needed their help to truly be successful.

Today, our pharmacies serve thousands of sick people, including many children with mitochondrial disease, who need medication made just for them. For me, helping our patients is everything. And what PCCA does helps make that possible.

Patient Success Story: Anhydrous Advantage

Jayse is a young patient with mitochondrial dysfunction, along with several other conditions. We used to have to compound all of his meds as 14-day supply suspensions, which was about 8 prescriptions every 14 days, due to short beyond-use date (BUD) limits. It was especially challenging to make sure the medications were not made too early or too late to ensure he would receive each prescription before the previous shipment of meds expired. This was an extremely labor-intensive process that had to be scheduled out meticulously.

With the introduction of SuspendIt® Anhydrous, Jayse’s meds now have the potential for much longer BUDs, which simplifies his life (and ours) considerably. Now he has his refills prepared once a month, rather than every 2 weeks.

Personal Success Story: Persistence & Ingenuity Pay Off

I’ve been visiting a particular Senator’s office for years. He’s a retired physician, so he always had an interest in what we do, but it never seemed like we connected. A few years ago, some of his staffers visited our pharmacy, and since then we’ve been able to meet with his health policy officials and health care attorneys in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), which has FDA oversight.

Then, during the 2023 PCCA ACT Legislative Conference, the magic finally happened! A conversation about Rectal Rockets piqued his interest. When I returned home, I promptly mailed him a sample plastic Rectal Rocket with a write-up highlighting how it originated in our great state of Louisiana from the late PCCA member Robert Boudreaux.

A few weeks after that (and after more than a decade), he wanted to come tour our pharmacy. This retired gastroenterologist is now the ranking member of the Senate HELP Committee. His opinion is influential, impacting how his colleagues make decisions. For him to truly understand our needs is a BIG WIN!

Compounding: It’s Personal

Being able to provide compounded medicine and high-quality nutraceuticals to patients is key, and sharing my expertise with them is an essential part of what we do. It's incredible to witness the positive impact a tailored treatment plan can have on a patient's life, providing not only relief from symptoms, but also a tangible improvement in long-term health outcomes.

Patient Success Story: From Resection to Revitalization

A patient who’d been battling Crohn's disease for several years sought our help regarding a persistent vitamin B12 deficiency despite regular cyanocobalamin injections. This deficiency stemmed from malabsorption issues after bowel resection surgery, along with mucosal damage and ileum inflammation.

After consulting with PCCA Clinical Services, I recommended a compounded formulation of methylcobalamin in MucoLox™, designed to be taken sublingually — unlike traditional oral or injectable cyanocobalamin therapies. Her healthcare provider agreed and prescribed the new therapy. Within two months, her B12 levels had drastically increased, reaching the highest point in 25 years. She has told us multiple times that her quality of life, energy and mental alertness have improved tremendously.
