How did you come into pharmacy compounding?

There was a pain specialist who told me he preferred to use pharmacies that can compound, and he specifically wanted me to compound pain creams. I told him no problem. I really had no idea where to begin. So, I went to PCCA Primary Training (now CORE Compounding Training) expecting to be a compounding expert when I came home. Little did I know that this training was just the tip of the iceberg in regard to potential. I’ve been committed to compounding ever since.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Helping people!

What’s a memorable patient moment?

When I gave a patient the last dose of her COVID-19 vaccine series. She gave me a hug because she was now able to go to California to visit her new grandson.

What has been your biggest "WOW" moment as a PCCA member?

PCCA’s International Seminar 2021 was my first. What an incredible experience! I sat on the plane on my way home thinking about the great group of clinical compounding pharmacists, the devoted PCCA team members and all of the other compounder members who I consider my friends. I came to the conclusion that PCCA is not just a corporation, but a community – committed to helping patients. I’m proud to be a part of this community.

What is your favorite PCCA base?

Fixed Oil Suspension Vehicle. It is nothing fancy but it’s the cornerstone of so much we do in veterinary compounding.

What is your favorite PCCA educational program?

My Concierge Compounding group! We are a mix of extremely talented compounders who are all willing to help each other. I consider them all friends and not just colleagues.

What does “Compounding: It’s Personal” mean to you?

My wife is a breast cancer survivor. During her radiation, she suffered with pain from radiation burns and could not sleep. Her radiologists only offered ibuprofen to ease her pain, because there were no double-blind studies for anything else. The ibuprofen did not help. I worked with another member of her care team who wrote a prescription for compounded formulation using PracaSil®-Plus. It didn’t eliminate the pain completely, but it allowed her to sleep throughout the night and made her more comfortable. What we do as compounders is important.
