Another year is in the books, and it’s one that none of us will soon forget. We’ve published over 50 posts on The PCCA Blog in 2020. They ranged from important regulatory updates affecting the entire pharmacy compounding industry to clinical and business information related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for reading, and we hope you will continue to come back. If you do, you can expect the same high-quality research, analysis and authoritative advice characteristic of our top blog posts from this year. Based on the average number of reader visits per day, here are our top posts of 2020:
1. Coronavirus Update: Hand-Washing, Nasal Sprays and Masks — What Research Is Saying
In this extensive article originally published in April and updated in August, co-authors Yi Liu, Daniel Banov, Gus Bassani and Matt Martin discuss what research is saying about different types of cleansers for hand hygiene, some nasal sprays that are being studied for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, and the filtration efficiency of different types of materials for face masks.
2. Compounding Update: HCG
In this brief regulatory update from January, co-authors Matt Martin and Melissa Merrell Rhoads informed readers that the FDA had changed its classification of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) from a drug product to a biologic product. The reclassification went into effect on March 23, 2020. From that date on, compounders could no longer compound with HCG, and PCCA retired all of our HCG formulas at that time.
3. What is “maskne," and what can we do about it?
“Maskne” is a new term describing the acne caused by wearing masks, an issue made more common by the COVID-19 pandemic. Jane Jones explains this condition and provides potential compounded options that physicians and pharmacists may consider for their patients.
4. 5 Tips to Help Your Compounding Pharmacy Finish the Year Strong
Mark Gonzalez has some advice about helping your compounding pharmacy finish the year successfully — 5 pieces of advice, to be exact. But you’ll have to check out his brief and informative article to see what he recommends.
5. Potential COVID-19 Treatments: What Is the Evidence?
In this expansive article, Deborah Clark, Sebastian Denison, Yi Liu and Matthew Glisch team up to provide information about the morbidity, mortality and pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 along with many potential options that prescribers and pharmacists might consider for their patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
