To me, it represents the trust and confidence our patients have in us as a team of individuals capable of finding solutions to any challenge.
I've been fortunate to experience various roles in the pharmacy practice setting, including working with IVs and narcotics, as an integral part of the clinical team in a hospital setting and as an environmental pharmacist. However, I felt a sense of stagnation and a yearning for something fresh and inventive. Compounding has provided me with career fulfillment where every day is dynamic — it's a blend of innovation, creativity, challenge and satisfaction. I work with individuals who haven't found solutions in the commercial realm and crafting unique, unconventional solutions for them is incredibly gratifying.
I didn’t know the term “compounding” existed without mention of “PCCA”! My first Google search on how to start my compounding pharmacy led me to PCCA. I reached out to Mnar Shlieba [PCCA Senior Business Development Specialist] and she initially welcomed me with open arms in 2019. And now, here I am, up and running with PCCA’s support.
Compounders are an integral part of our healthcare system and address so many issues:
A 78-year-old patient of ours underwent a colostomy 10 years ago, which eventually resulted in painful rectal scar tissue. When she initially told me about her condition, she was fighting back tears describing how painful it was to even sit down. Working with her physician and PCCA Clinical Services, we compounded a topical formula with pentoxifylline in PracaSil®-Plus for her. Six weeks later, she was shedding tears of joy because she was finally able to sit comfortably.
Ellage® Anhydrous Vaginal is hypoallergenic, offers the potential for longer beyond-use dates* and has a great texture. It’s a terrific option for the many women dealing with vaginal irritation, sensitivity and allergy to commercial vaginal creams. Ellage is awesome!
*USP 795 establishes BUD limits by type of preparation in the absence of a USP−NF Compounded Preparation Monograph or CNSP-specific stability information.
We promote our compounding pharmacy by introducing ourselves to physicians who know how to write compounds and to other prescribers who aren’t familiar with compounding personalized medicines — they are always amazed by the customized solutions we provide for their patients!
Compounding allows you to think outside the box to help patients who aren’t able to take manufactured medicines. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are interested in compounding should constantly educate themselves. PCCA is a great start and resource — they provide help and expert advice. It’s also important to seek help and advice from peers and professionals within the industry.
